At Halton Housing, we’re passionate about supporting learning that makes a real difference - not just in theory, but in practice. That’s why we’re proud of our long‑standing partnership with Riverside College, where we offer work placements to students studying City & Guilds qualifications across a range of trades.

Over the years, this relationship has grown into a trusted collaboration that helps young people take their first steps into skilled careers.

With the cost of university continuing to rise, many young people are re‑evaluating their options and choosing more practical, affordable routes into skilled careers.

Apprenticeships and trade pathways are becoming increasingly popular, but with placements and apprenticeship opportunities in short supply, gaining meaningful experience can still be a real challenge.

By offering structured work placements, we help bridge the gap between classroom learning and the realities of working life. Students get the chance to apply their skills, build confidence and strengthen their employability once their studies are complete, and we play an active role in supporting those who choose a hands‑on, vocational route into the world of work.

This year, we’ve already supported four students across Joinery and Plumbing, including Mason, a Joinery student completing his 30‑hour placement. His time with us has given him valuable hands‑on experience and a real insight into what a future career in the trade could look like.

We’ll continue to host placements on a rolling basis throughout the year, ensuring more students can benefit from the same opportunity. None of this would be possible without the support of our brilliant MTs, who have given their time, guidance and expertise to act as mentors. Their willingness to share knowledge and support young people makes a genuine difference, and helps shape the next generation of skilled professionals.

Overall, this work reflects our commitment to developing future talent and supporting our local community, ensuring students have access to real‑world opportunities that set them up for success. It’s one of the ways we invest in the next generation and help create pathways into secure, meaningful employment.

As Rhianne Johnson, our Organisational Development Assistant, who has championed this initiative internally, puts it:

I’m really passionate about creating opportunities for people who are choosing a trade pathway. With apprenticeships being limited, it felt important that we did what we could as an organisation to help students gain real, meaningful work experience. Partnering with Riverside College allows us to bring learning to life - giving students the chance to apply their skills in a real setting and build confidence for the future.

We’re proud of the role we play in supporting students to turn learning into experience, and we look forward to continuing to grow this partnership
