As part of our Destination Kingsway and Stewards programme, several old garages in Kingsway have been demolished, making way for a cleaner, safer and more open space.

People who live in Kingsway shared their views through the Destination Kingsway and Stewards resident survey in September 2025. Residents told us they wanted shared spaces to be cleaner, safer and better looked after. Many also said that improving green spaces and shared areas was especially important to them.

At the same time, inspections showed that a group of garages in the Kingsway backlands were no longer safe or fit for purpose. The structures also made the area look untidy and were difficult to manage and maintain.

In response to this feedback, £28,327.40 of funding was used to improve the area. Halton Housing funded and managed the demolition of 11 garages.

Removing the garages has already made a noticeable difference. The backlands now look cleaner and more open, are safer to use, and are much easier to look after.

Importantly, this change also creates new opportunities for future environmental and community led improvements, shaped by what residents have told us they want to see. It directly supports our commitment to building Thriving Communities as part of Our Future Focus 25–28 - creating communities that are safer, greener and more welcoming for everyone.
