Halton Housing shortlisted for top sustainability award
We’ve been shortlisted for the 2026 Northern Housing Awards in the category of Best Approach to Decarbonisation. We’re really proud of this achievement because it reflects the hard work and care our teams put in every single day.
Being shortlisted isn’t about one project. It shows how we’ve made sustainability part of everything we do: how we look after our homes, how we support our customers and how we plan for the future. For us, sustainability means making good decisions today so our communities stay strong in the years ahead. It’s about improving people’s lives now while protecting the environment and keeping homes affordable.
This includes reducing carbon emissions in a way that doesn’t increase costs for customers, improving the energy efficiency of our homes and preparing for future climate risks like heatwaves and flooding. It also means giving our colleagues the skills and confidence they need to make sustainable choices in their day‑to‑day work.
Our recent SHIFT Gold accreditation shows how far we’ve come and helps guide the next steps we need to take.
Sustainability is not a standalone project for us. It’s part of how we work across the whole organisation. We connect our sustainability work to Our Future Focus 25–28, use strong data to guide decisions and plan improvements to homes with long‑term needs in mind. We support residents with energy advice and wellbeing help, make sure all new colleagues receive sustainability training and encourage teams to look for ways to save energy and reduce waste.
We’re also planning ahead for the homes and communities of 2040 and beyond. This includes improving the environmental data we collect, planning retrofit work over the long term, preparing homes for heat and flood risks, moving towards low‑carbon heating, protecting biodiversity and improving the way we buy materials. We will continue to report openly on our sustainability progress each year so people can see how we are performing.
We’ll find out in June whether we’ve won the award, and we’ll keep you updated as the big night gets closer. Fingers crossed!
