Runcorn Sports Football Club has received £540 from our Helping Hands Fund to support the continued growth of its popular walking football programme, helping more local people stay active, improve their wellbeing and build social connections.

The club currently runs four adult teams, including men's open age, under-21s, a ladies' recreational team and the only walking football team in Halton for people aged over 50. With participation continuing to grow, the club is now looking to expand further by creating additional teams to cater for increasing demand.

The funding will be used to purchase essential equipment for a new team, including football kits, balls, training markers and a first aid kit, helping to ensure new and existing players have everything they need to take part.

Walking football provides an accessible way for people to enjoy the game while improving their physical health, but its benefits extend well beyond the pitch. The club has highlighted the positive impact the sessions have on mental wellbeing, helping participants reconnect with old friends, combat isolation and enjoy a regular social activity.

Runcorn Sports FC currently has 38 registered walking football players, with numbers continuing to increase week by week. The walking football team also represents Halton in national competitions, including The FA Walking Football Cup and the Walking Football Association (WFA) National Cup.

Peter Bazley, Chairman of Runcorn Sports FC, said: “This project helped in getting more people involved in active exercise and allowed us to source materials we use week in and week out. On behalf of our football club, this kind donation has really made a huge difference and we can’t thank you enough.”

The project supports our Thriving Communities priority in Our Future Focus: 2025-28 to support initiatives that promote health and wellbeing, while helping residents develop stronger community connections.

Through the Helping Hands Fund, Halton Housing continues to invest in local organisations that make a positive and lasting difference across Halton.
