Helping Our Community: Supporting Long Loaf – Six months on
We are proud to continue supporting Transform Widnes’ Long Loaf project, following our donation of £1,000 in ASDA vouchers as part of our Destination Kingsway / Stewards programme, which focuses on bringing people together and improving health and wellbeing.
Long Loaf is a free lunch held every Wednesday at St Paul’s Church Hall in Widnes. It offers more than just a hot meal, it’s a space where people can come together, enjoy friendly conversation, hear a short thought for the day, and feel part of a supportive community.
The project is all about kindness, connection, and caring for those who may feel lonely or need extra support. Since January 2026, our contribution has made a meaningful difference.
Between 17 January and 17 June 2026, the vouchers have helped provide 642 meals for people in need, those who are vulnerable, and anyone looking for a sense of community.
The team at Long Loaf shared their gratitude, highlighting that the support has not only helped put food on the table but has also created opportunities for people to socialise and build friendships. It’s a powerful reminder of how something as simple as a shared meal can have a lasting impact on wellbeing and connection.
Long Loaf sources much of its food through FareShare, but additional ingredients are often needed to ensure meals are healthy, balanced and appealing. Our vouchers have helped bridge that gap, enabling the team to keep delivering meals that warm both hearts and plates.
Through our Destination Kingsway / Stewards survey, residents told us they wanted more opportunities to feel part of their community and a greater focus on health and wellbeing. Supporting initiatives like Long Loaf is one of the ways we are responding to that feedback and investing in what matters most to our customers.
Reflecting on the ongoing impact, Georgina Crank, Social Impact and Engagement Officer, said: “Long Loaf continues to show how food can bring people together. It’s fantastic to see the difference this support has made over the past six months, helping not just to feed people, but to build friendships and strengthen the community.”
