Work has recently been completed to improve the backland areas between Henderson Road, Brunner Road, Squires Avenue and Wavertree Avenue, as part of our Destination Kingsway and Stewards programme.

Originally planned as a one-day Spruce Up Your Streets event, it quickly became clear that additional work was needed to achieve a lasting transformation. The project was therefore extended across two days, allowing teams and volunteers to carry out further improvements to the space.

The main event took place earlier this, where a strong turnout of volunteers supported colleagues from across Halton Housing throughout a busy and productive day. Prior to this, groundwork including grass cutting and preparation within a wooded area had already been completed.

On the day, additional support and machinery enabled the team to tackle more intensive work. This included clearing a heavily overgrown woodland area that contained old structures, rubble and built-up waste, as well as breaking up compacted ground to allow for restoration. In total, at least eight van loads of waste were removed from the site, alongside further fly-tipping clearance and litter picking across the wider area.

Pathways were also improved by removing thick moss, helping to make them safer and more accessible.

Following the clean-up, weed treatment was carried out and new planting introduced, including Verbena Bonariensis and wildflower seeding across grassed and woodland areas. These improvements will continue to develop over the coming months as the planting establishes.

This was a huge team effort, supported by colleagues and volunteers, with a second day of work ensuring the project was completed to a high standard.

Georgina Crank, Social Impact and Engagement Officer said: “It’s been fantastic to see the difference this work has made in such a short space of time. What started as a one-day event quickly showed there was an opportunity to make an even bigger impact, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.

We’re really grateful to everyone who got involved and gave their time to help improve this space for the local community. It’s a great example of what can be achieved when we work together.”

While the initial transformation is already visible, the longer-term impact will become even more apparent as the space continues to improve.

Our Spruce Up Your Streets initiative directly supports our commitment to building Thriving Communities as part of Our Future Focus 25–28 - creating communities that are safer, greener and more welcoming for everyone.

Further updates and photography will be shared over the coming weeks.
