Three young people get a ‘kickstart’ at Halton Housing
Body
Last month we were delighted to welcome our first intake of Kickstart recruits.

The Kickstart Scheme, part of the government’s Plan for Jobs, aims to create hundreds of thousands of job placements for 16 to 24 year-olds on Universal Credit, who are at risk of long-term unemployment.

We have welcomed three recruits who will embark on placements across the organisation which are designed to give them the opportunity to build their skills, confidence, and gain experience with the aim of improving their chances of finding long-term work.

The recruits will undertake a 25 hour a week work placement over six months whilst being paid.

Each Kickstart Scheme placement will involve a core curriculum of career-based training, including behaviour and professional competency development, as well as technical, on the job experience.

Our first three Kickstarters rolled up their sleeves last month to start their brand-new jobs with us. They are Sam, who is joining us in environmental services and gardening, Michael, who’s working with our team in void properties and Darwin, who’s assisting in facilities and estates.

All three are settling well into their roles and are enjoying an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and earn a salary during these difficult times.

Power in Partnership (PIP) provided initial training for the recruits prior to them joining, whilst Halton Housing’s learning and development team will provide workshops and sessions on job application interview skills and housing.

Neil McGrath, Deputy Group Chief Executive & Chief Financial Officer at Halton Housing said: “As one of the borough’s largest employers, providing local employment and improving people’s lives, we place immense value in investing in people.

“This scheme is a fantastic way for Halton Housing to build an even more inclusive future, and we are excited to see the valuable contributions these new recruits will make

“Helping people back to work and creating new jobs, especially for younger people, is a national priority and Halton Housing is pleased to play our part in supporting the UK’s economic recovery.”

So far in 2021, in addition to the three Kickstart recruits Halton Housing has recruited three apprentices.

Watch this space for profiles on our Kickstarter's in the coming weeks.

'Spruce Up Your Streets' in Grangeway/Laburnum Flats, Runcorn
Body
The Spruce Up Your Streets’ team were back in force when they hit Grangeway on the 28th April. Armed with their paintbrushes, paint and gardening equipment, our colleagues and local customers came together to spruce up a communal flat block area in Grangeway which is a part of our retrofit project in partnership with Ecogee.

The brick planters were cleared of weeds, and new plants were planted in their place to give the area a new look for Summer.

The shed doors were also given a mini makeover, with the doors painted to match the new windows and doors on the flat block. What’s more, so that residents can enjoy the new rejuvenated space, a new bench has also been gifted for the area.

This day was a great success and hugely appreciated by customers living in the area. We’re also delighted with the results, seeing the improvements to the communal space and how much our customers love what’s been done, is what our ‘Spruce up your Streets’ initiative is all about.

If you participated in this day, we’d love to hear from you. Could you spare just a few minutes of you time to complete this survey - https://forms.office.com/e/JQdD3cdhPf forget, you can find out more about ‘Spruce Up Your Streets’ and see upcoming events here.

Halton Housing Supports Halton Young Carers' Teddy Bears Picnic Event
Body
Last month, we proudly supported the Halton Young Carers' Teddy Bears Picnic by donating 25 packed lunches to help make the day special.

The event, held at the charity's Runcorn Office Carers’ Garden, brought together children from across the borough, who each brought their favourite teddy bear. The day was filled with fun activities, games, and of course, a delicious picnic.

Our support for this event was part of our Destination Old Town programme. All the children who attended had a wonderful time.

Watch the Facebook reel below to catch a glimpse of the day!

Halton Carers Centre is a network partner of the Carers Trust. They work to reach unpaid young & adult carers and develop services for them across the borough. Find out more at www.haltoncarers.co.uk.

Body
Local MP Mike Amesbury welcomed a tour around Reconnecting Runcorn’s flagship projects, where onsite works have commenced, completed or progressed on all 8 of the projects this quarter including structures going in at our very own High Street independent living development.

Other exciting project updates include:

Unlock Runcorn begin an archaeological excavation to reach the bullnose
Construction begins at Youthy.com
The Brindley Enhancement is underway
Peace and tranquillity as work finishes on the Peace Garden at the Buddhist Temple

Representing the Runcorn constituency, Mr Amesbury met with project representatives to hear more about each of them and what is next for them.

Hear our Development Manager Ria Griffiths provide an update on the progress on site at High Street in the video below.

Read more about the progress on the other seven projects of Reconnecting Runcorn here.

Reconnecting Runcorn was awarded £23.6m in 2021 from the UK Government’s Towns Fund as part of the Town Deals Programme to deliver the Runcorn Town Investment Plan. This funding enabled the development of eight projects incorporating 15 strands, that collectively will enhance local connections, through improved training and economic opportunities, enhanced transport links, housing and environmental improvements and upgraded visitor attractions.

Relatives of Thomas Hazlehurst visit independent living scheme named after him
Body
Several direct descendants of Thomas Hazlehurst (1779-1842) recently toured our new independent living scheme, which is named after him, in his honour. Thomas Hazlehurst was a local businessman who founded the soap and alkali manufacturing company, ‘Hazlehurst & Sons’ in 1816 and which operated in Runcorn until the early 20th century.

Back in 2020, Halton Housing ran a company-wide naming competition for the scheme. A variety of names were suggested, with the internal project group choosing ‘Hazlehurst’.

During the recent visit, family members were invited to plant a tree in the grounds to commemorate their visit.

Shirley Corcoran, Neighbourhood Support Manager said:

“It was an absolute honour to welcome the family of Thomas Hazlehurst. They enjoyed a tour of the building and gardens and planted a tree to commemorate their visit. It was quite surreal talking to family of the man who inspired the name which we use so much every single day. It was lovely to meet them all and a huge thanks to them for taking the time to come and visit.”

Peter Vardy, former chairman of the Runcorn & District Historical Society who helped facilitate the visit of the family members said:

“Thomas Hazlehurst and his family made a huge contribution to the local economy in the 19th century so we are really pleased to see their legacy live on through a building like this which is bringing so much pleasure to the people already living here. We are sure that Thomas Hazlehurst would be proud of what has been achieved here.”

Claire Williams, 3x great granddaughter of Thomas Hazlehurst said:

“The descendants of Thomas Hazlehurst were thrilled that Halton Housing decided to name this scheme after him and that several of us have had this opportunity to visit it and plant a tree to commemorate the occasion.”

Hazlehurst was officially opened earlier this year by the Mayor of Halton. The scheme is located on Actons Wood lane in Sandymoor Runcorn and offers 100 modern, spacious self-contained apartments with extensive communal facilities including a contemporary bistro which is already proving to be extremely popular with the local community as well as residents.

Hundreds of people worked on the scheme which was built by Countryside Partnerships, (formerly Vistry Partnerships Northwest), including partners, contractors and colleagues from across Halton Housing and took just took 26 months to complete from starting on-site in August 2020.

For more information about the scheme, its facilities and how to apply to live at Hazlehurst, visit www.haltonhousing.co.uk/hazlehurst.

'Spruce Up Your Streets' in Quarry Court, Widnes
Body
The sun was shining for our latest 'Spruce up your Streets' event at Quarry Court this week as residents also made preparations for their Coronation celebration party.

The ’Spruce Up’ included the removal of all weeds, cutting back overgrown plants and foliage, and removal of broken ornaments as well as repairing the raised beds. An on site skip meant that residents were also able to dispose of any unwanted items easily.

A number of our colleagues from across the organisation including some of our grounds maintenance team came together to give the communal area some tlc just in time for the Coronation party later in the day.

Thanks to Julia, a Quarry Court resident who popped by to share with us a collection of photographs of the communal garden over the years.

A massive thank you to everybody who came along and got involved.

Halton Housing Named Finalist in 2025 Halton Business Awards
Body
We’re proud to announce that Halton Housing has been shortlisted in two categories at the 2025 Halton Business Awards: Employer of the Year and Commitment to the Community.

This marks the second consecutive year that Halton Housing has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to the local community - an achievement that reflects the dedication and impact of our teams across all areas of the business.

The Employer of the Year category celebrates organisations that go above and beyond in providing a supportive, engaging and forward-thinking work environment. At Halton Housing, we’re committed to fostering a culture of learning and development, offering opportunities for professional growth, and championing the health and wellbeing of our employees.

Our nomination for Commitment to the Community highlights the meaningful work we continue to do within Halton. Initiatives such as Spruce Up Your Streets, our Uniform Support Scheme, and the Christmas Hampers Campaign were all featured in our submission - and clearly made an impression with the judges.

The winners will be announced later this year at a special awards ceremony hosted at Halton Stadium. Until then, we’re keeping our fingers crossed and looking forward to celebrating with other businesses doing great things across the borough.
