Cancelled: Spruce Up Your Streets & Estate Walkabout – Lugsdale A & B, Widnes (two sessions)
    Body
    Estate Walkabout Postponed ❌

Please be advised that this week’s scheduled estate walkabout around Lugsdale has been cancelled.

A new date will be confirmed and shared shortly.

    We apologise for any inconvenience.

Part 1: Spruce Up Your Streets – 10am to 1pm

We'll be kicking off the day at Viking Court, Widnes, WA8 7SW, where teams from across Halton Housing will come together to help 'spruce up' the outdoor communal spaces. This will include general tidying, tackling any immediate maintenance issues, and making the area cleaner and more welcoming for residents.

This is a great opportunity for residents to get involved and make a real difference in their neighbourhood. Whether you're keen to help out or just want to come along and see what's happening, everyone is welcome. Your Neighbourhood Officer, David, will also be on hand during this session to listen to any concerns or feedback you may have about your home or the local area.

Taking part not only helps improve where you live but also gives you the chance to meet neighbours, Halton Housing staff, and find out more about what’s happening in your community.

Please see the map below for the specific starting point:

    Part 2: Estate Walkabout & Litter Pick – 4pm to 6pm

In the afternoon, we’ll be continuing the event with a litter pick and Estate Walkabout, starting from Margaret Court Car Park, Widnes, WA8 7XZ. This walkabout will cover areas within Lugsdale A and B, including streets such as Cambridge Street, Oxford Street, Quinn Street, Trinity Place, Brynn Street, Keble Street, Alforde Street, Clarke Gardens, Lacey Court and Street, Catherine Street, Adelaide Court, Margaret Court, Elizabeth Court, Charlotte Walk, Suttons Lane, and Queens Court.

Please see the map below for the specific starting point:

The purpose of the walkabout is to identify and respond to any issues across the estate - whether that’s fly-tipping, property repairs, or concerns about the communal environment. You’ll have the chance to speak directly with our teams and raise any matters you think we should be aware of.

We hope you can join us at either or both parts of the event. It’s a great way to show pride in your neighbourhood, meet new people, and work together to make the area a better place for everyone. We look forward to seeing you there!

Halton Housing shortlisted for Money Advice Award
    Body
Our Welfare Benefit and Money Advice and Debt Recovery Team have been shortlisted for the ‘Special Achievement Award’ at the Institute of Money Advisers (IMA) Money Advice Awards 2021.

Halton Housing’s Debt Recovery Team and Money Advice Team are specialist teams who manage customer debt (mainly rent arrears) and are on hand to support customers and agree affordable rent repayment plans and provide specialist advice on claiming benefits, maximising income, managing debt and money advice.

The award aims to recognise the extra efforts made by all those in the advice sector during the coronavirus pandemic. This includes continuing and adapting the provision of advice to clients in the context of the pandemic and the impact of the work undertaken on clients and the community.

The Welfare Benefit and Money Advice Team worked in partnership with our Debt Recovery Team, to prevent customer arrears rising when the coronavirus pandemic hit. They quickly realised that they needed to change the way they worked, switching their primary face-to-face contact into online, digital methods. Their joint effort, supported by our neighbourhood and supported living teams, really made an exceptional difference to our customers in these scary times.

Earlier this year the Welfare Benefit and Money Advice Team launched our monthly virtual Zoom to Us: Money Matters Q&A sessions where our customers can get help with any money, benefit, or welfare-related questions they might have.

Commenting on being shortlisted, Halton Housing Head of Neighbourhoods Income and Support, Jonathan Horsfall said: “We’re thrilled to be nominated in this years’ awards. The teams have worked throughout the entire pandemic to support our customers, and this is testament to the hard work and dedication despite their increased workload.”

Nominations were of a very high quality this year and competition was tougher than normal as judges were considering two years' nominations at once.

The winners will be announced at a virtual awards ceremony as part of the IMA’s annual conference on Thursday 1st July.

    Body
We have potted funding to Halton Community Snooker Academy to support the next generation of players in the borough via its Helping Hands community funding initiative.

Qualified snooker referee and coach John Twist created the ‘Halton Community Snooker Academy’ over eight years ago with the aim of bringing people of all ages and abilities together to learn the sport of snooker in an open and safe environment.

The academy has grown, with huge support from parents and the Mill Brow Snooker & Social Club. The club is affiliated with the English Partnership for Snooker and Billiards’ 147 Club scheme, to support its development and ensure that it operates within a safeguarding framework.

The additional support from Halton Housing’s Helping Hands fund has provided new uniforms and trophies for the club’s players.

Halton Housing’s Engagement and Social Impact Team and members of our Customer Forum recently visited the club to see first-hand the difference the money is making.

Our Helping Hands community funding initiative makes available funding, skills, materials and resources to community projects and groups which benefit the Borough. Applications are judged by our Customer Forum.

Cheryl McCabe, Halton Housing’s Social Impact and Engagement Manager said: “Everyone involved in the academy is so passionate. It’s easy to see why more and more people of all ages are keen to come along and get involved.

“We’re really pleased that this funding will help with the continued growth and success of the academy and inspire the next generation of snooker players in the borough.”

John Twist, founder of Halton Community Snooker Academy said: "Halton Housing has made a significant difference to the academy with its funding and has enabled us to purchase polos shirts and hoodies. It will also allow us the opportunity to fund tours to different parts of the country. On behalf of the academy, thank you for your support Halton Housing.

If you or someone you know runs a community-based project that could benefit from the financial support from the Helping Hands initiative, whether it’s a refurb of a scout hut, a kitchen makeover in a community centre, or a hospice garden in need of some TLC, get in touch today for an application form.

Inspirational Neighbourhood Support Manager shortlisted for Award
    Body
Shirley Corcoran, a Neighbourhood Support Manager at Halton Housing has been shortlisted in the ‘Woman of the year (tenant/customer focus)’ category at the Women in Housing Awards 2021.

The Women in Housing Awards celebrates the leaders, innovators and changemakers across the housing sector, shining a light on the incredible work carried out by teams and individuals during the past 12 months.

Shirley, who joined Halton Housing in 2000, oversees a team of 12, who together manage 200 homes across Halton, including three sheltered housing schemes and two independent living schemes for the over 55s.

Nominated by her colleagues, Shirley is a real motivator and has been described as an ‘inspiration’. Her tenacity and determination to assist customers shines through and she constantly goes the extra mile to ensure that residents are safe and secure. Never has this been more evident than during the last 12 months with the challenges of the pandemic, where she led the team through some difficult times.

With restrictions on visitors to stop the spread of Covid, Shirley rallied her team to ensure that crucial on-site and floating support services continued to operate so that every customer had food, medication, and practical support to ensure their healthy mental and physical wellbeing was cared for.

Shirley’s natural enthusiasm and ability to motivate her team in the face of these challenges along with her in-depth knowledge of Housing is a powerful combination which gains her the admiration and respect from customers and colleagues alike.

Commenting on being shortlisted, Shirley said: “I am delighted and touched to have been shortlisted for this Women in Housing award. The past 12 months have certainly been challenging, and the work that has been done up and down the country to keep residents safe and secure really makes me proud to work in Housing. Being nominated for the award by those I work with makes it all the more special but I couldn’t do what I do without the support of an amazing team.”

On behalf of everyone at Halton Housing we would like to congratulate Shirley on being nominated and wish her the very best of luck!

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Tuesday 7 September at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, taking place alongside Housing 2021.

Mirror Image Community Training Ltd awarded £1000 through our Helping Hands fund.
    Body
We are delighted to announce that Mirror Image Community Training Ltd has been awarded £1000 through our Helping Hands fund.

This vital funding will support the continuation of their free weekly wellbeing and hair & beauty sessions for young people aged 10–18 (and up to 25 with SEND) in the Grangeway area of Runcorn.

Held in a local hair and beauty training salon, these sessions provide a safe, welcoming space for young people to build practical skills, boost their confidence, and access mental health support. The Monday wellbeing sessions include activities such as stress and anxiety management, arts and crafts, confidence-building exercises, and healthy eating awareness. On Wednesdays, young people take part in hands-on hairdressing, nail art, and makeup workshops using professional tools and techniques.

Thanks to the Helping Hands funding, Mirror Image can now cover the cost of essential supplies such as hairdressing mannequins, nail art kits, arts and crafts materials, and diamond art sets. Importantly, the funding also ensures that every participant receives free snacks and drinks at each session—something the organisation sees as a necessity, not a luxury.

Georgina Crank, Social Impact and Engagement Officer, shared:

"We’re proud to support Mirror Image Community Training through the Helping Hands fund. Their work is making a real difference to young people in Halton, offering not just skills and support, but also a sense of belonging and care. This funding will help them continue to provide a safe, creative space for young people to thrive."

Thriving Communities is one of the 5 key themes in our 3-year corporate plan ‘Our Future Focus: 2025 - 28’ and supporting initiatives like this help us achieve our purpose of Improving People’s Lives.

Helping Hands Helps Ukes on Track Grow Their Sound
    Body
Ukes on Track, an inclusive community ukulele group based in Halton, has received a boost from our Helping Hands fund to support their mission of bringing people together through music.

The group, which welcomes members of all ages and abilities from across Halton and surrounding areas, aims to combat social isolation by offering a free, friendly space for people to learn a new skill, make friends, and improve their wellbeing. They also regularly perform at local care homes, community events, and charity fundraisers, spreading joy through music wherever they go.

To help them grow and continue offering their sessions free of charge, Ukes on Track applied for funding to purchase new equipment including ukuleles, music stands, and active PA speakers to enhance their performances, especially those held outdoors.

Thanks to the Helping Hands grant of £350, the group can now welcome more members and ensure everyone has access to the instruments and equipment they need.

Our Social Impact and Engagement team recently had the pleasure of visiting Ukes on Track during one of their performances at a local care home, where residents were treated to a set. The atmosphere was filled with smiles, singing, and toe-tapping tunes, showcasing the real impact of community-led initiatives like this one.

Ukes on Track also hope to grow their membership further by reaching more Halton Housing customers and supporting local events.

Applications to our Helping Hands fund are reviewed and judged by our Customer Forum, ensuring that funding decisions are shaped by the voices of our customers and reflect the needs of our communities.

Supporting initiatives like this is part of our Thriving Communities theme—one of five key priorities in our 3-year corporate plan, Our Future Focus: 2025–28. It’s all part of our purpose: Improving People’s Lives.

If you or someone you know is running a community project that could benefit from our Helping Hands support—whether it’s a youth club, a community garden, or a wellbeing initiative—we’d love to hear from you. Visit our Helping Hands webpage to learn more.

Knockout news for Widnes boxing club
    Body
An amateur boxing club in Widnes is celebrating some knockout news thanks to a donation from Halton Housing.

Kingsway Amateur Boxing Club has been awarded £750 from Halton Housing’s Helping Hands Fund which will be used to help secure the protective head guards and competition kit for its junior members.

Amy, Social Impact and Engagement Officer said: “We went to visit the group as part of the funding review to see how the money has been spent. We spoke to several of the kids who said they have been attending the club for years and they really enjoy it. There was a large group of kids taking part in general fitness, and then we watched some of the kids in the ring wearing the new kit. It’s so rewarding to see where the money from the funding goes and how it is appreciated from the community groups.”

Liam, Kingsway Boxing Club Manager said: “Everyone at Kingsway Boxing Club would like to say a huge thank you to Halton Housing for their generous donation to the club. The money was used to buy a variety of resources including new headguards and competition tracksuits and to print competition kits. This will allow us to continue to provide low cost boxing sessions for the children and young people of our local community in Halton, contributing to their mental and physical wellbeing. In addition, the donation means we have kit and equipment to allow our members to represent the club and the town by boxing competitively. Thanks again from all the coaches and members at Kingsway Amateur Boxing Club”.

Kingsway Amateur Boxing Club is based at Optimum Fitness on Hale Road in Widnes and meets every Monday from 6:30pm – 8pm. Budding boxers wishing to get involved can contact the club via their Instagram page at @boxing_kingsway.

Grange community turn out in force for Halloween Fun Day
    Body
Over 350 people enjoyed a fantastic Halloween fun day on Saturday 29th October in Grange Community Centre, as part of our Destination Grange Programme.

We were delighted to bring back the annual event which we have supported for several years, following a break due to Covid – much to the delight of local families.

Both entry and entertainment were free, and the event was bursting with attractions including, bouncy castles, arts and crafts, stalls, food and drink, tombola, a fancy dress competition, and face painting.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Halton, Cllr Mark Dennett & Andrea Dennett also attended and judged the popular fancy dress competition, commenting later in the day on Twitter about what a fantastic event it was.

We had a great afternoon today at Grangeway Community Centre, Runcorn for a “Halloween Family Fun Day” arranged by @HaltonHousing
It was nice to see the community centre well attended by families dressed up for Halloween and enjoying all the activities today pic.twitter.com/LEfypbXmHu
    — Mayor of Halton (@HaltonMayor) October 29, 2022

The fun day was also an opportunity for residents to find out more about the activities and events which regularly take place at the centre – an issue that was highlighted in our recent Destination Grange survey. Responses showed that many children in Grange do not use the community centre, despite its offering.

The Halloween event also gave residents the opportunity to sign up to the various clubs, and Youth Hub operated by Power in Partnership (PIP) which take place at the centre including Karate and dance classes; resulting in several children signing up.

We were so pleased to see so many families from our community come along to join in the fun. Not only was the day a great opportunity to meet the neighbours, but it was also a chance for residents to get to know our colleagues a bit better too. Members of our Neighbourhoods and Engagement Teams were present throughout the day, both to support the event and offer advice.

Amy Harrison, Halton Housing Customer Engagement Officer who helped organised the day said: “This is a day to bring the community together and allow parents bring their children to have a fantastic time, without it costing a fortune. Thank you to everyone who attended and to all our small business stalls who came along to sell their lovely products. We hope everyone enjoyed the day and will continue to support Grange Community Centre.”

    Fancy Dress Competition Winners

Toby, 8 dressed in Skull Costume won Best Costume
Emily, 5 Dressed as Day of the Dead won Best Makeup
Georgia, 10 Dressed as Winifred from Hocus Pocus won Creative Costume

Check out some of the feedback we have had following the event below.

Halton Housing estate services operative scoops community award
    Body
Keiron Gordon, an Estate Services Lead Operative at Halton Housing has won the ‘Young Adult Award' at Age UK Mid Mersey's Community Kindness Awards 2020, after being nominated by his friends and colleagues.

The Community Kindness Awards aims to recognise unsung heroes of all ages in our communities who make life a little easier for those around them.

An instantly recognisable member and volunteer in his hometown, Widnes, Keiron, 23, spends much of his spare time litter picking, emptying overflowing street bins, running campaigns, raising awareness, and reporting issues to improve the environment.

Two years ago, Keiron become a Keep Britain Tidy #litterhero ambassador which has aided him in highlighting the issue of litter and waste in the UK and the world. Keiron also set himself the target of completing a litter pick every Saturday for the year as well as litter picking of evenings during summer.

Keiron moved into full-time employment with Halton Housing as an Estate Service Operative in May 2016 and has recently been promoted to Estates Services Lead Operative taking an active role in clean-up days with the Estate Services Team whilst keeping up with his voluntary work.

Commenting on winning the award, Keiron said: “I was completely shocked when I received this award. I do what I do because it’s my passion and a lifelong hobby and I can’t see myself stopping any time soon. The support I receive from the public is absolutely immense and I am extremely grateful. Thank you to my friends and colleagues who voted for me and supporting me, I really appreciate it.”

The award ceremony was held virtually during a live-streamed event which is available to watch here.

Last year, we provided a funding boost for ‘Keep Widnes Tidy’, a voluntary litter picking group in Widnes set up by Kieron. The funding from our Helping Hands initiative will enable the group to purchase new equipment, allowing more people to get involved in its activities.

We were also proud sponsors of the 'Community Enterprise Award' which was won by Quigley’s Bakery in Runcorn.

It was also great to see our new Customer Forum Chair, Louise Nulty pick up the 'Community Kindness Award'.

On behalf of everyone at Halton Housing, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the winners at this year’s Age UK Mid Mersey's Community Kindness Awards.

Tenancy Types: A Guide for Customers
    Body
    1. Types of tenancies

An assured tenancy with the Preserved Right to Buy

This type of tenancy applies to all those people who had secure tenancies with Halton Borough Council and transferred to Halton Housing on 5th December 2005.

    A normal assured tenancy

This type of tenancy applies to people who were housed by Halton Housing from another social landlord after 5th December 2005, and already had this type of tenancy. It does not have the Preserved Right to Buy attached to it.

    A starter tenancy

This will apply to all new customers of Halton Housing who have never had a tenancy before. It effectively means that you will have a ‘probationary’ tenancy for your first 12 months with Halton Housing. If there are no problems during this time, your tenancy will automatically convert to a normal assured tenancy as described above.

    2. What is a tenancy agreement?

This is the document we asked you to sign when you moved in. It sets out our responsibilities as your landlord, as well as your rights and responsibilities as a customer.

    3. What are my rights as a tenant?

The following rights apply to all types of tenancies:

    Occupation of your home

You have the right to live peacefully in your home without interruption or interference from us as long as you keep to the terms of your tenancy agreement.

    Security of tenure

You will have security of tenure as long as your home is your only or principal home. This means that we can only end your tenancy by obtaining a court order.

    Right to consultation

We will consult you on any matters affecting your home.

    Right to information

You have a right to information from us about a number of different areas, such as policies, our performance and your tenancy for example.

The following rights apply to assured tenants only

    Right to make improvements

You can carry out certain types of improvements to your home, as long as you get our approval, and any other necessary approvals (for example, planning consent or Building Regulations approval) beforehand.

If you want to make changes to gas/electric systems we will require you to use a qualified contractor.

    Right to compensation for improvements

If you carry out certain improvements to your home and then your tenancy ends, you may be entitled to some compensation towards the costs of these improvements. This will be explained further at the time you apply for consent to carry out the works.

Right to assign to a qualifying successor

You have the right to assign your tenancy to a person who would qualify to succeed the tenancy upon your death.

    Right to exchange

You have the right to exchange your tenancy with that of another tenant of Halton Housing, or of another housing association or a Council, as long as you have written consent from us. Find out more about this here.

    Right to acquire

You have the right to acquire your home under the Housing Act 1996, unless you live in the type of housing excluded by that legislation such as sheltered housing, or other excluded housing (full details available on request).

The following right only applies to those people who transferred from Halton Borough Council to Halton Housing before 5th December 2005

    Preserved Right to buy

If you had the right to buy your home at the time of transfer this will continue with Halton Housing. Where you have both the preserved right to buy and the right to acquire you cannot exercise both rights at the same time.

    4. What are my responsibilities as a tenant?

Your responsibilities are clearly set out in the regulations in your tenancy agreement. These conditions are there for your benefit and make it easier for action to be taken against anyone that causes a nuisance to others.

    Your main responsibilities are:

To pay your rent and other charges when due
To have the property as your main home
To keep the property and any garden area in a clean and tidy condition
To ask for permission before carrying out any alterations or improvements to the property
To have consent in writing before sub-letting part of the property
Be a good neighbour, make sure that you, your family, or any friends or visitors to the property do not cause nuisance or harass your neighbours or local community.
Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours. Get involved with the community. Inform us of any problems in the area
