About Catalyst Science Discovery Centre

Catalyst is a registered charity and interactive science museum based in Widnes, dedicated to inspiring curiosity and learning in science and technology. As a community-focused venue, Catalyst also delivers a range of wellbeing and educational programmes that support local families and promote inclusion.

The Project: Postnatal Restore at Catalyst

With support from Halton Housing’s 20 for 20 campaign, Catalyst launched Postnatal Restore—a wellbeing initiative for new mums in Halton. Delivered in partnership with specialist postnatal fitness instructor Ginette Rough, the programme offered five weekly postpartum exercise sessions in Catalyst’s unique Observatory space.

Each session was designed to support safe physical recovery, boost confidence, and foster peer connection among mothers with pre-crawling babies. In addition to the classes, participants received an annual family membership and a complimentary café drink after each session—encouraging social interaction and helping families feel at home in the museum.

Community Impact

The pilot programme supported ten local mums and their babies, offering a safe and welcoming space to connect, recover, and bond. The initiative addressed key issues such as maternal mental health, social isolation, and early parent-child bonding—providing a holistic approach to postnatal wellbeing.

By combining physical activity, peer support, and access to a family-friendly venue, Postnatal Restore helped new parents feel more confident and connected during a vulnerable stage of life.
