About The Philanthropists

The Philanthropists (Halton) is a collective of seven creatives and community activists working to promote arts, culture, and community engagement across Halton. Their mission is to use creativity as a tool for connection, inspiration, and local pride — benefiting residents, visitors, and those who work or study in the borough.

Their latest initiative celebrates one of Widnes’ most remarkable figures: Jack Ashley, a local hero whose legacy continues to inspire.

The Project: The Jack Ashley Mural

With support from Halton Housing’s 20 for 20 campaign, The Philanthropists will create a large-scale mural honouring Jack Ashley, a Widnes native who rose from poverty to become the first deaf MP in the House of Commons, a BBC broadcaster, and a champion for disability rights, HIV awareness, and domestic abuse support.

The mural will be located in the Central and West Bank Ward, where Jack grew up, and will serve as a powerful visual reminder of triumph over adversity. The project will also include community engagement activities, such as mural painting taster sessions and storytelling workshops, to involve local residents — especially young people — in the creative process.

Community Impact

The mural will be a source of inspiration and pride for Halton residents, particularly young males and those living in areas of social deprivation. By celebrating Jack Ashley’s journey, the project aims to raise aspirations and spark conversations about resilience, opportunity, and community action.

Workshops and engagement sessions will be open to all, including Halton Housing customers, and will help foster a sense of ownership and connection to the artwork and its message.

Working Together with Halton Housing

The Philanthropists are keen to collaborate with Halton Housing on mural location planning, community workshops, and promotion through Halton Housing’s networks and Reach magazine. With additional funding already secured from the Community Empowerment Fund, and support from local councillors, MP Derek Twigg, and Jack Ashley’s family, this project is ready to make a lasting impact.
