Apprentice in Waterfront Point

Meet Callum, our Plumbing and Heating Apprentice

Apprentice in Waterfront Point
Text

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I have an interest in construction and an apprenticeship is a great way to get into the trade.  The opportunity to ‘earn while you learn’ and gain real, hands-on experience drew me to this route.

What you do in a typical day/week?

Working as part of the gas team, we have a range of jobs throughout the week; we have emergency situations that involve a customer having no heating or hot water, we perform annual gas safety checks on all the properties, fix leaks on central heating, fix boiler breakdowns, carry out boiler installations, complete radiator installations. The list goes on...

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

I love working around customers and the satisfaction of helping a customer when they are in need. To add to this, I enjoy working around experienced gas engineers and feel privileged having the opportunity to learn the trade on a day-to-day basis, with such a talented team.

What skills have you developed so far during your apprenticeship?

Vitally, so far I have learned how to perform a gas safety check under the supervision of a gas safe registered engineer. I can now explain and carry out every step of a boiler install or boiler swap and execute certain aspects of boiler break downs and parts.

Why did you choose Halton Housing?

Great pay for apprentices and a lot of employee benefits! The organisation has even supported me in buying my own tools.

What would you say to someone considering applying for an apprenticeship?

Go for it, you won’t regret it!
