Meet Jamie, our Installation Electrician / Maintenance Electrician Apprentice

Jamie is our Installation Electrician / Maintenance Electrician Apprentice! Find out how Jamie is doing as he moves towards the midpoint of his apprenticeship.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship, in my opinion, is the best way to learn a trade. Learning through experience and not just having theory-based knowledge means you see real-life problem solving and develop a better understanding of what you’re doing.
What you do in a typical day/week?
Through the week I get experience in electrically testing properties and I am supported in completing remedial works such as fixing smashed sockets. On a Thursday, I go to college where my tutors guide me through my theory work so that I can achieve my qualification.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
Overall, I enjoy work the most when we come across a big job as this not only allows me to further practice and extend my knowledge of the trade, but it also allows me to gather evidence such as photographs for my NVQ portfolio which is essential in becoming a qualified electrician.
What skills have you developed so far during your apprenticeship?
So far taking different approaches towards solving problems and issues is one of the biggest transferable skills that I can definitely say I have gained. Another skill I have developed is being able to visualise works before anything has begun to ensure I am taking the correct approach - this also goes hand in hand with working in a team with other trades. Additionally, being in full time employment has helped me stay within a routine and helped me develop as a person.
Why did you choose Halton Housing?
Halton Housing is clearly a company that looks after its customers as well as its staff which I see as the most important thing when searching for jobs. It was also evident that all the tradesman have years of experience and knowledge to pass on to someone in my position.
What would you say to someone considering applying for an apprenticeship?
It is just as beneficial as other education routes such as A Levels, university etc!
A lot of research must be done before you choose the most suitable apprenticeship.
If you secure an interview, make sure that again you do enough research and are prepared!
