Meet Louis, our IT Apprentice
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I chose an apprenticeship as I felt the mix between work and college days suited my learning style better. It allows me to learn in a more practical, hands-on way while still gaining qualifications. Additionally, I was eager to gain real‑world experience in IT and apply what I learn directly in the workplace.
What do you do in a typical day/week?
Every other Thursday I am in college, where I work on my portfolio and learn about fundamental IT concepts. For the rest of the week, I am based in the office assisting staff with IT-related issues, as well as shadowing my manager during more complex projects to build my experience and understanding.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
I am from Halton myself, so being able to assist Halton Housing staff in supporting the local area is always very rewarding. The upgrades I have helped install in our independent living schemes are among my favourite projects, as they allow me to have a direct and positive impact on the community.
What skills have you developed so far during your apprenticeship?
My technical skills have developed significantly during my apprenticeship. Through a combination of college work and mentorship within the office, I have been able to grasp many new IT concepts, including cloud‑computing administration and hands‑on hardware repair.
Why did you choose Halton Housing?
I chose Halton Housing as it is a company local to me, which made it particularly appealing. It also has a strong presence in the community and a great reputation for its workplace culture. Being part of a small, supportive team motivates me to produce my best work.
What would you say to someone considering applying for an apprenticeship?
A Halton Housing apprenticeship is a great opportunity to learn on the job while building transferable skills. It offers the chance to gain valuable experience within a friendly and supportive team environment.
